(Bangkok Post file photo)The Finance Ministry will offer 84 million baht in cash prizes to encourage holders of the 55 million debit cards on issue to make more use of them, to promote the national e-payment system and a cashless society. Finance permanent secretary Somchai Sujjapongse said around 70% of ATM cards doubled as debit cards, but only 10% were used to pay for goods and services. The prizes for 1,001 lucky spenders will total 5.6 million baht each month, or 67.2 million baht for the whole year. The shops must not have income exceeding 500 million baht, and not be part of a state enterprise. Mr Somchai said the fee charged for each debit will be 0.55 baht per transaction, down from 1.50-2.50 baht.
